To fully understand the value of highly available systems and solutions, we should provide an understanding of what highly available means in today’s computing environment. Early on, highly available systems required the use of mirrored systems and clustering which doubled the hardware and implementation costs.
In today’s computing environment, high availability can be achieved at a significantly lower cost. Depending upon a customer’s needs and their environment, solutions as simple is redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID), grid computing, virtualization, and consolidated warm-site solutions can meet the needs of most customers while doing so at a minimal cost.
Active – Active Clustering

This solution is being use to provide high availability and load balancing features to any client-server application such as web server, ftp server, vpn server, file server where data integrity is not a big deal for client request. These two nodes will actually act as one server that serve all client request.
Active – Passive Clustering

This solution is widely being use by almost all mission-critical application such as databases and email mailbox. At one time only one node can serve all client request, but the resources can be moved anytime to standby node to take over the active role.
